Our Visas have been approved. We've rented a house. I bought us a steamer trunk (yes, one of those big 'ol trunks people used to use when traveling by ship). Only problem now is that they don't seem to want our children in their schools!
I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that the nation that invented bureaucracy is still rife with it, but I can't believe how backward the school application process is. In Ontario, if you move, the new school in your area absorbs you - done. In Oxford, they have the right to tell you (very politely though) to bugger off. All of the schools close to the house we have rented have told us they have no spaces. At this rate I'll be walking the kids to London each morning to get them to class!
I did make a little headway during an early morning phone call with a slightly-less-surly member of the "Oxford School Admissions Team." He informed me in that "read-in-between-the-lines" kind of way that the school does have the ability to absorb us IF they choose to. Hence, I am now busy putting together a dossier of information that portrays my children as the sweetest, most-gifted little angels that no school could do without. Of course, they are - really! But the fact that I am collecting reference letters for my 4 and 5 year-olds is somewhat disturbing. "While at play, Hannah demonstrates clear compassion and empathy for her peers... ya-da-da ya-da-da.... It does seem a little ludicrous.
I'm hoping that I won't be forced to home-school - that will definately put my lady-of-leisure, BBC-watching, bob-bon-eating plans to pot!
